Bulldogs travel to Imlay City

The Romeo Wrestling team was at Imlay City High School on Saturday, February 28 for a rare afternoon start.  This season has seen a shortage of referees so many have had to pull double duty on Saturdays.  Thus, a ref will officiate a morning quad and then travel to another high school to officiate an afternoon quad.  In attendance for the afternoon were: Flint Kearsley, Imlay City, Lamphere, and Romeo.

The Bulldogs had Kearsley for the first round.  The Hornets were missing a number of wrestlers, but, the ones they had were pretty good.  Romeo took round one 66-15.

Next up were the Spartans from Imlay City.  Imlay City always has a competitive team and this year was no different.  The Bulldogs wrestled tough as nails and pulled off a few big wins over some tough individuals.  The end result was Romeo 57  Imlay City  18.

In the final match of the evening Romeo had the Lamphere Rams.  Lamphere and Romeo were both 2-0 on the day coming into the last round.  Again, the Bulldogs won some big individual match-ups on their way to a 57-18 victory.

It was a great day that saw 12 freshman or sophomores see varsity action.  The goal for the day was to try things we have been working on in practice and the day was a nice step in the right direction.  There was some real improvement even from the previous Wednesday.  The Bulldogs are now 13-1 overall.

Here are the individual results for Romeo on Saturday, February 27, 2021:

MAC Red season closes on a high note!

Wednesday, February 24, 2021

The Macomb Area Conference Red Division wrapped up at Warren Woods Tower instead of Utica Ford.  Ford had to sit out the final quad due to some wrestlers in quarantine.   Perennial powerhouse Westland John Glenn filled in for Utica Ford.  The Bulldogs faced a tough, scrappy John Glenn team to kick off the night and finished with state-ranked Warren Woods Tower (#2 in D2).

Romeo got off to a great start winning 3 of the first 4 weight classes.  The Rockets came back with a few wins of their own to tighten the score at 21-18, but, the Bulldogs finished strong and came out with a 42 -24 win.

The final MAC Red dual meet of the season for the Bulldogs was against WWT. Both teams entered the dual missing some guys.  Romeo got off to a commanding 24-0 lead after four matches before WWT scored 3 straight wins to tighten the score.  For the second straight time in the night, Romeo finished the dual meet strong and closed out a 48-23 victory.

Bulldogs Compete at Crestwood

The Romeo wrestlers have been traveling to Dearborn Heights Crestwood High School for the past few years to see different schools and face some good competition. This year was a little different since Crestwood could only host four schools based on limitations from the state. Fortunately, the Bulldogs were still able to have a couple tough matches and end the week on a high note!

Romeo faced Crestwood the first match and the Chargers came charging out of the gate winning three of the first four weight classes. Romeo won nine of the last ten weight classes for a 49-15 victory over the scrappy Chargers.

In round two the Bulldogs faced up and coming Stoney Creek. The Cougars from Stoney Creek have been getting better over the past few years. They brought a strong team and good numbers to Crestwood. The Bulldogs lost six of the first eight matches and were down 27 -12 on the scoreboard. Romeo came roaring back with six straight victories on their way to a 45-27 victory over the Cougars.

The final round was against Romulus Summit Academy. The Dragons from Romulus came in with an inexperienced team and small numbers. It gave the Bulldogs a chance to give some JV guys a taste of some varsity competition. After all was said and done, four Bulldog wrestlers earned their first varsity win and concluded the day with an 84-0 victory.

MAC Red season gets started with a BANG!

The Macomb Area Conference Red Division pits the top wrestling schools together in what has been one of the toughest divisions in the state of Michigan. Opening night for the MAC Red was hosted by perennial powerhouse Anchor Bay. Joining Anchor Bay and Romeo were two of the biggest schools in the state in Chippewa Valley and Dakota.

Round one started at 215 with Romeo facing the Big Reds from Chippewa Valley. The Bulldogs got off to a great start by winning ten of the first 11 weigh classes on their way to a 63-10 victory.

Round two matched up two top ranked teams in Romeo (#10 in D1) and Macomb Dakota (#4 in D1). The match started at 285 and saw Dakota get off to a 25-0 lead. That’s right when it started to get interesting. Romeo clawed back by winning the next seven straight weight classes to take a 28-25 lead going into the last match. The heroic comeback was stopped short when Dakota won the last match for a 31-28 final.

The final round of the evening had Romeo against the Tars from Anchor Bay. There were some great match-ups in the dual, but, the Bulldogs got the better of the Tars for a 57-15 victory.

Overall it was an exciting evening of wrestling and a great start to the MAC Red season!

Grapplers FINALLY Start Competition!

It was a long time coming, but, it is finally here! We are talking about the high school wrestling season. For a season that was supposed to start back in November, it seemed like a never ending roller coaster of hope and patience. It seemed like forever at times. Thankfully, most of our wrestlers continued to train during the “Covid Pause.”

The Romeo High School wrestling season is off to a very good start! The Bulldogs started competition at Romeo on Saturday, February 13th and they competed well. With only five days of person to person practice before the first match, there was some uncertainty going into the opening matches. With Croswell-Lexington and Fenton on the docket, the competition was guaranteed to be very fierce. They both have solid teams year in and year out. Birmingham Groves always brings some quality wrestlers to the table so the first quad was a good one.

The Bulldogs used a combination of 4 freshmen, 7 sophomores, 4 juniors, and 3 seniors throughout the day en route to a 3-0 start to the season. The first dual meet was against Croswell-Lexington. The match started at 103. Romeo rattled off 9 straight wins before Cros-Lex took 3 of the last 5 matches on their way to a 50-15 victory. Next up was Fenton. Romeo started with 7 straight wins before Fenton countered by winning 4 of the last 7 matches. Romeo ended up winning 51-15 over Fenton. For the final match the Bulldogs wrestled Birmingham Groves and were victorious 75-6.

It was an exciting day to say the least! From the first varsity win for all four freshmen to the agonizing wait being over for all the seniors, it was a great day!

Thanks to all the parents who helped work the tables and collect tickets at the door.
