Bulldogs head to Saline and Flint
It was a crazy week of trying to figure out the line-ups for Saturday, January 29th. We had 16 of our 40 wrestlers out for various reasons. The projected line-up literally changed by the hour all week. After originally having 3 tournaments lined up, we had to cancel the Fenton JV and try to piece together Varsity A and Varsity B teams for Saline and Flint Southwestern. Thankfully we were able to put a couple competitive teams together
Romeo Varsity A took 3rd of 16 at the Saline Super Duals despite voiding heavyweight all day. Saline was a 16 team tournament filled with great competition in all 4 pools. Romeo won pool play by total points scored criteria. There was a round robin with Romeo, Saline, and Belleville. Saline fielded a senior dominated line-up and Belleville had a very scrappy, well-balanced team.
Here are the team scores for pool play:
Romeo 77 Ida 6
Romeo 37 Saline 26
Romeo 30 Belleville 37
The Bulldogs had Middleville Thornapple Kellogg in the semifinals. Middleville is a very experienced team with a great history. Romeo lost 26-37 and dropped down to face always tough Oxford for third place. Romeo found themselves down by 11 with three matches to go. The Bulldogs pulled out an exciting finish to top Oxford 35-31. It was a great day of wrestling and a chance for some younger guys to get a taste of varsity wrestling at it’s finest!
