Bulldogs Qualify Five for Individual Regionals

February 9, 2019

The Romeo grapplers ended up having a pretty good day on Saturday, February 10 at Clarkston HS for the Individual District Tournament.  The Bulldogs had only four seniors of the 14 wrestlers entered in the district tournament. Any wrestler who places in the top four moves on to the Individual Regional Tournament.  The top four at regionals move on to the Individual State Tournament at Ford Field. While some wrestlers are realizing their dreams and goals, others are realizing the finality of their season and, in some cases, their wrestling career.  It is a very exciting time of the year for wrestlers. We all train for this time of the year. When guys put so much time and effort into the sport they love, there is a lot on the line. What even makes it tougher is it is a first round knockout.  It was a proud day overall because the Romeo wrestlers competed well, the fan support was great, and we still have five alive!

Jacob (Junior) is a dedicated wrestler who put in a lot of time to improve.  He started really coming into his own the past couple weekends. He competed very well and came about 3 seconds short of advancing in the 3rd round.  The experience of wrestling at districts will help him get ready for next year.

130  Dominic Todaro (44-8) placed 2nd and scored 0.0 team points.

135  Elijah Grubb (7-22) place is unknown and scored 0.0 team points.

  • Champ. Round 2 - Kevin Gibbons (Rochester Adams) 22-10 over Elijah Grubb (Romeo) 7-22 (Fall 1:24)

Elijah (Senior) has been a leader all year in the practice room.  He is one of the hardest workers and always helps the younger guys.  It is always tough to see a senior have his season end.

160  Joe Hauler (19-22) place is unknown and scored 0.0 team points.

  • Champ. Round 2 - Thomas Wandrie (Oxford) 17-10 won by fall over Joe Hauler (Romeo) 19-22 (Fall 0:54)

Joey (Sophomore) had a tough first round match-up, but, we had a good feeling going in.  He ended up losing, but, he definitely learned something. He will be better for it. The experience was great for Joey.

171  Connor VerBurg (33-21) placed 6th and scored 0.0 team points.

  • Champ. Round 2 - Connor VerBurg (Romeo) 33-21 over Darko Dojcinovic (Stevenson) 1-13 (Fall 1:33)

  • Cons. Round 4 - Joseph Dreon (Adams) 21-11 sudden victory over Connor VerBurg (Romeo) 33-21 (SV-1 6-4)

Connor (Senior) was in a very competitive weight class, but, he was definitely in the mix.  His two losses were by one point and the other was overtime. It was a tough end to a very good season for Connor.  One day doesn’t take away from rest of the year

171  Corey Allison (10-22) place is unknown and scored 0.0 team points.

  • Champ. Round 2 - Joseph Dreon (Adams) 21-11 over Corey Allison (Romeo) 10-22 (MD 10-2)

Corey (Junior) is another one who really started improving the past few weeks.  He earned a shot at districts with his work ethic and attitude and competed like he belonged.  It was a great experience for Corey.

189  Zef Djurasevic (13-5) placed 3rd and scored 0.0 team points.

  • Champ. Round 2 - Zef Djurasevic (Romeo) 13-5 won by decision over Frank Davis (Clarkston) 25-18 (Dec 7-2)

  • 3rd Place Match - Zef Djurasevic (Romeo) 13-5 won by decision over Kyler O`Grady (Adams) 33-10 (Dec 5-1)

Zef (Senior) came out late after recovering from an ankle injury just in time to get some matches under his belt and place in districts.  Zef had a very good tournament and is in the mix to qualify for state. A solid week of practice will be just what the doctor ordered

215  Alex Lukowski (15-11) place is unknown and scored 0.0 team points.

  • Champ. Round 2 - Alex Lukowski (Romeo) 15-11 over Abraham Yousif (Troy Athens) 4-13 (Fall 0:46)

  • Cons. Round 3 - Mark Nikollaj (Eisenhower) 14-13 injury default over Alex Lukowski (Romeo) 15-11 (Inj. 0:00)

Alex (Junior) was off to a great start, but, got hurt in his second match.  Unfortunately, he was not able to continue. Alex is another one who came out late after recovering from an injury.  I’m sure he will bounce back and start training for next year as soon as he can.

285  Jonathon LaFave (24-19) placed 4th and scored 0.0 team points.

  • 3rd Place Match - Mason Slocum (Lake Orion) 18-6 over Jonathon LaFave (Romeo) 24-19 (Dec 4-3)

Jonathon (Junior) is basically a first year wrestler.  What he lacks in experience he makes up for in conditioning, heart and toughness.  He came out of nowhere as the 11th seed to move on to regionals...pretty remarkable!

285  Angel Espinoza (9-4) placed 6th and scored 0.0 team points.

  • Quarterfinal - Magd Boutany (Rochester) 27-15 won by decision over Angel Espinoza (Romeo) 9-4 (Dec 2-0)

  • Cons. Round 4 - Mason Slocum (Lake Orion) 18-6 over Angel Espinoza (Romeo) 9-4 (Dec 5-1)

Angel (Junior) didn’t have a lot of matches coming into district, but, that didn’t stop him from competing very well.  He lost a couple real close ones. Good thing is that Angel will be back again for another crack at it.

103  Michael Merritt (17-10) placed 6th and scored 0.0 team points.

  • Quarterfinal - Douglas Bombard (Adams) 27-11 won by decision over Michael Merritt (Romeo) 17-10 (Dec 6-3)

  • Cons. Round 3 - Michael Merritt (Romeo) 17-10 over Cade Odrobina (Stoney Creek) 15-14 (Fall 0:53)

  • Cons. Round 4 - Rylan Watson (Romeo) 34-16 won by decision over Michael Merritt (Romeo) 17-10 (Dec 7-1)

Michael (Sophomore) might be pound for pound the toughest guy on the team and he brings a strong work ethic to back that up.  He made a nice run, but, lost in the blood round. It was great experience for Michael to wrestle in the district so he knows what it is like for next year.  He will be back.

103  Rylan Watson (34-16) placed 3rd and scored 0.0 team points.

  • Quarterfinal - Rylan Watson (Romeo) 34-16 over Kade Rushlow (Oxford) 22-7 (MD 11-1)

  • Semifinal - Reese Willing ( Eisenhower) 35-7 won by decision over Rylan Watson (Romeo) 34-16 (Dec 5-0)

  • Cons. Round 4 - Rylan Watson (Romeo) 34-16 won by decision over Michael Merritt (Romeo) 17-10 (Dec 7-1)

  • 3rd Place Match - Rylan Watson (Romeo) 34-16 won by decision over Kade Rushlow (Oxford) 22-7 (Dec 4-0)

Rylan (Freshman) wrestled tough all tournament.  He had all quality opponents and he came out with a third place medal.  He is wrestling very well right now which will help him next week at regionals.

112  Caleb Youngblood (36-6) placed 2nd and scored 0.0 team points.

  • Quarterfinal - Caleb Youngblood (Romeo) 36-6 won by fall over Lance Garrisi (Romeo) 23-14 (Fall 1:36)

  • Semifinal - Caleb Youngblood (Romeo) 36-6 won by decision over Darren Mcleod (Oxford) 36-5 (Dec 3-0)

  • 1st Place Match - Andrew Hampton (Stoney Creek) 28-3 sudden victory - 1 over Caleb Youngblood (Romeo) 36-6 (SV-1 4-2)

Caleb (Freshman) was on a mission all day.  He had to beat two good wrestlers to advance to the finals.  Once he was in the finals, he may have wrestled his best match of the year.  The cool thing is he can still do better.

112  Lance Garrisi (23-14) place is unknown and scored 0.0 team points.

  • Champ. Round 2 - Lance Garrisi (Romeo) 23-14 won by fall over Kyler Castle (Stevenson) 1-14 (Fall 0:27)

  • Quarterfinal - Caleb Youngblood (Romeo) 36-6 won by fall over Lance Garrisi (Romeo) 23-14 (Fall 1:36)

  • Cons. Round 3 - Tamin Machart (Utica Ford) 18-7 over Lance Garrisi (Romeo) 23-14 (Dec 6-4)

Lance (Junior) brings experience and a knockout punch.  He is always in the mix. Lance caught a rough break after he secured a cradle or we might be taking another wrestler to regionals.  He did learn something along the way that will help him next season.

**Special Note:  Unfortunately two starters had to sit out because of injury.  Matthew Cali (Junior) broke his leg and Will Gaborek (Senior) tore his calf and LCL.  Both guys looked like they had a real good shot to make it before they got hurt. Will was really on a roll when he got hurt last week.  Fortunately for Matt he will have another crack at it next year.
