Three Bulldogs Place at Individual Regional!

February 16, 2019

On Saturday, February 16 at Clarkston High School five Bulldog wrestlers competed at the Individual Regional Tournament.  Of the five Bulldogs who participated, three are moving on to the Individual State Tournament at Ford Field on Friday, March 1 - Saturday, March 2.  Rylan Watson (freshman), Caleb Youngblood (freshman) and Dominic Todaro (senior) all placed in the top 4 to qualify for the Individual State Tournament.  This is the first time in school history that Romeo has qualified two freshman in the same year. All five wrestlers represented themselves and their team very well.  There are many highs and lows throughout the regional tournament, but, all five can hold their heads up after wrestling with courage, determination, and heart all day.  It was another exciting day of wrestling where our Bulldog wrestlers competed like the champs they are with the support from teammates and parents.

MHSAA Regional 1-1 Results for Romeo

130  Dominic Todaro (46-9) placed 2nd

  • Quarterfinal - Dominic Todaro (Romeo) 46-9 won in OT over Jackson Turnbow (Grand Blanc) 36-13 (7-5)

  • Semifinal - Dominic Todaro (Romeo) 46-9 won in sudden victory - 1 over Raymond Cole (Davison) 25-11 (4-3)

  • 1st Place Match - T.J. Daugherty (Kettering) 37-0 won by dec over Dominic Todaro (Romeo) 46-9 (Dec 12-5)

Dominic (senion) is no stranger to the Individual State Tournament.  This is the 4th time he has qualified after placing 8th last year. It wasn’t always easy at regionals, though.  Dominic had to win in overtime twice before the finals. He did a great job of keeping his compose in both matches.  In the finals he had a rematch of the district finals against Waterford Kettering and did a great job of competing and he closed the gap along the way.

189  Zef Djurasevic (14-7) did not place

  • Quarterfinal - Sam Hine (Midland) 34-9 won by fall over Zef Djurasevic (Romeo) 14-7 (Fall 3:26)

  • Cons. Round 1 - Zef Djurasevic (Romeo) 14-7 won by dec over Alexander Weick (Rochester) 16-11 (Dec 2-0)

  • Cons. Semi - Trevor McGowan (Davison) 20-8 won by decision over Zef Djurasevic (Romeo) 14-7 (Dec 7-3)

Zef (senionr) wrestled tough all day.  In the first round he had a tough draw with the 2nd place finisher from Midland.  Zef came through big time with a revenge win over Rochester. It just showed how bad Zef wanted it.  In the “blood round” Zef ran into a very experienced Davison wrestler. Once again Zef showed the heart of a champion only to fall in a tough 7-3 decision.  Zef has a lot to be proud of after missing over half the season with an injury from football and coming back to be one match away from the state tournament.

285  Jonathon LaFave (25-21) did not place

  • Quarterfinal - Ben Harris (Bay City Western) 40-5 won by fall over Jonathon LaFave (Romeo) 25-21 (Fall 4:25)

  • Cons. Round 1 - Jonathon LaFave (Romeo) 25-21 won by dec over Magd Boutany (Rochester) 27-17 (Dec 6-2)

  • Cons. Semi - Mason Slocum (Lake Orion) 21-7 won by dec over Jonathon LaFave (Romeo) 25-21 (Dec 2-1)

Jonathon (junior) was a pleasant surprise for us all year, but, an unpleasant surprise for his opponents in many cases.  Jonathon dabbled a little with wrestling in middle school so this was essentially his first year of wrestling. Jonathon also avenged a loss from last week over Rochester.  In the blood round Jon lost 2-1 in another rematch against Lake Orion, but, he showed toughness and grit that, when paired with some experience, will help transform him into a force to be reckoned with next year.  Overall it was an outstanding season for Jonathon.

103  Rylan Watson (36-18) placed 4th

  • Quarterfinal - Rylan Watson (Romeo) 36-18 won by dec over Terek Engelter (Grand Blanc) 37-13 (Dec 8-4)

  • Semifinal - Kavan Troy (Rochester) 46-0 won by major decision over Rylan Watson (Romeo) 36-18 (MD 10-0)

  • Cons. Semi - Rylan Watson (Romeo) 36-18 won by fall over Connor Schelb (Midland) 31-11 (Fall 4:57)

  • 3rd Place Match - Reese Willing (Eisenhower) 38-8 won by fall over Rylan Watson (Romeo) 36-18 (Fall 4:54)

Rylan (freshman) has really come on after starting the season 12-11.  He has been on a 24-7 tear since the beginning of January. Rylan beat a tough kid from Grand Blanc before facing the  #1 ranked kid from Rochester. He gave him a great match especially after riding him out the whole 3rd period. In the blood round Rylan kept his composure after getting taken down and poured it on before pinning his Midland opponent.  It was an awesome day to say the least!

112  Caleb Youngblood (38-7) placed 2nd

  • Quarterfinal - Caleb Youngblood (Romeo) 38-7 won over Jacob Coffey (Bay City Western) 32-15 (Fall 3:44)

  • Semifinal - Caleb Youngblood (Romeo) 38-7 won by fall over Owen Payne (Davison) 25-10 (Fall 3:24)

  • 1st Place Match - Andrew Hampton (Stoney Creek) 31-3 won over Caleb Youngblood (Romeo) 38-7 (Dec 3-1)

Caleb (freshman) has been impressive all seaon.  He has it all - strength, toughness, experience, composure, and determination.  Caleb is always working to get the pin, which is another great quality. He pinned his first two opponents before his rematch from last week’s district final against Stoney Creek.  In an exciting final match Caleb came up a little short on points, but, came up big on earning respect from everyone who watched the match!
