Brotherly Love = All-State!

Saturday, April 3, 2021

After a great week of practice, the Bulldog wrestlers were ready to head to the Individual State Tournament at the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo.  In these crazy times, there was still that little bit of uncertainty before the last Covid test of the year.  All five Romeo wrestlers passed the test.  Step one was accomplished.  Weigh-in was Friday night.  Everyone made weigh and was ready to compete on Saturday.  Step two down!

It was the first time the state tournament was started and completed in one day.  This was a little different, but, the competition was still the best of the best.  The Romeo wrestlers carried themselves well and competed like champs!  In a tournament where many matches come down to the last 30 seconds or the last takedown, you have to be at your absolute best to get on the podium.

The Bulldogs had four wrestlers in the blood round where you win-you place, you lose-you’re out.  Every one of the last four matches was a tough, close match.  The Romeo wrestlers came out on top in one of the four matches.  All the coaches and parents were very proud of the effort of all the Bulldog wrestlers!

Congratulations to the following state placers:

103  Owen Youngblood (9) – 7th

5 Bulldogs Punch Ticket to States!

Saturday, March 27, 2021

Davison hosted the Individual Regional Tournament on Saturday in what was billed as the toughest regional tournament in the state.  The competition did not let the fans down one bit.  Many dreams were achieved and many hearts were broken.

Nine Romeo wrestlers showed up for weigh-in at Davison High School with their eyes on a birth to the State Finals held at the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo on Saturday, April 3.  After the weigh-in there were 8 wrestlers for Romeo.  It is tough getting beat by the scale, but, an important lesson was learned.

Romeo had two in the finals who were guaranteed a trip to Kalamazoo, but, still had 6 guys in the blood round who had to battle.  It’s one of the most exciting rounds of the weekend for sure.  You win and punch your ticket.  You lose and your season is over.

All 6 Bulldogs wrestled like champs!  Many times in these matches it is a shame someone has to lose.  Romeo went 3-3 in the blood round losing 3 matches by a total of 5 points.

Congratulations to the following state qualifiers:

140  Caleb Youngblood (11)

Romeo Bows out at Team Regionals

Wednesday, March 24, 2021

The Bulldog Wrestling Team traveled to Clarkston High School to take part in the Team Regional Tournament on Wednesday.  In round one it was  #7 Romeo vs. #10 Clarkston and Utica Ford vs. Stoney Creek.  Here are the results:

Clarkston  36  Romeo 28
Stoney Creek  46  Utica Ford 31

Clarkston beat Stoney Creek 39 to 33 to win the Regional Championship.

The Bulldogs started strong against Clarkston.  Romeo got off to a 12-6 lead after four matches.  Romeo built on their lead over the next 5 matches to take a 28-18 lead going into the last 5 matches.  Clarkston had five senior wrestlers who are no strangers to the wrestling mat waiting at the top of their line-up.  The Bulldogs wrestled hard and went nip and tuck, but lost 4 straight decisions before Clarkston closed the deal with a first period pin.

It was the kind of dual meet you would expect from two top teams.  All in all the Bulldogs wrestled with heart and left it all on the mat.  Romeo ends the season with an overall record of 18-3.  Here is the box score from the dual meet:

Romeo Has 9 Qualify for Regionals

Romeo traveled to Waterford Kettering to compete in the Individual District Tournament on Saturday, March 20.  Before Romeo made it to Waterford on Saturday the Bulldogs got some bad news on Friday.  A positive Covid test and two close contacts later Romeo was left short-handed.  It was some pretty devastating news for the three wrestlers, their families and the team.  Since all wrestlers had to be entered into the tournament by noon on Friday, there was no chance to put any other wrestlers in to take their place.

Before the bad news, we were very optimistic about all 14 wrestlers advancing.  In hindsight all 14 wrestlers would have/did have a great shot at advancing.  Nine of the 11 wrestlers placed and will wrestle next week in the Individual Regionals at Davison HS.  The two who didn’t make it were a match away losing in the blood round.

Overall Saturday was a great day as five Romeo wrestlers made it to the finals!

District Champs!

With Romeo waiting to see who they would face, Lake Orion and Oxford met in round one of the Team District hosted by Lake Orion.  Oxford won 72-0 to advance.  The 7th ranked Oxford Wildcats and the 8th ranked Romeo Bulldogs wrestled about as tough as a dual meet as you can wrestle.  Out of the 14 matches 11 were decided by a decision and only 3 by a major decision.  There were no tech falls or pins.  Fortunately for the Bulldogs 10 of the 14 matches went their way.  Romeo started by winning the first 6 matches before Oxford countered by winning the next 3 straight.

The final score was Romeo 33 Oxford 12

Bulldogs Complete Regular Season

Romeo hosted Melvindale, St. Clair Shores Lakeshore, and Utica on Tuesday, March 9.  Not only was it the last regular season match, but, it was the last time the seniors would compete in their home gym.  Seniors Joey Hauler, Carson Kohl, Connor Kohl, Michael Merritt, and Kaydan Munn started this journey at Romeo Middle School and saw it through.  They have been great leaders and mentors to the team.

Romeo started the night by beating Lakeshore 74-6.  It was one of those duals where if there was a close match Romeo won it to make the score look a little worse than it was.  The last dual of the night was Romeo against Utica.  The Bulldogs took care of business and won 60-18.

The JV team did an amazing job all season and looked great in their last matches.  We were able to match up some quality exhibition matches that were the highlight of the night.  Overall it was a great night of wrestling!  The Bulldogs finished the regular season with a 17 – 2 overall record.  Next up is the Team District!  Romeo will travel to Lake Orion on Wednesday, March 17 to face the winner of Lake Orion and Oxford for the District Title.

On a special note, Caleb Youngblood earned his 100th career victory!

Romeo Wrestlers Face Top Competition

The Bulldog wrestlers traveled to Catholic Central High School in Novi on Sat., March 6.  The quad meet featured Catholic Central (ranked #2 in D1), Grandville, Romeo (ranked #9 in D1), and Woodhaven.  There were over 25 top-ranked wrestlers between the four teams.  It was a great day in terms of competition and of the number of JV matches we had.  Every team had deep line-ups.

Round one for Romeo was against the Woodhaven Warriors.  After dropping the first match, the Bulldogs won six straight to take a nice lead and never relinquished.  The final tally was Romeo 57 and Woodhaven 19

In the second round, Romeo matched up with the nationally ranked Catholic Central Shamrocks.  The Bulldogs were a step behind the Shamrocks as Catholic Central built a strong lead.  Even though there were some close matches along the way, Catholic Central won by a commanding 65-4 score.

Round three was between Romeo and Grandville.  It was a battle of the Bulldogs!  Grandville is always one of the top teams in the state.  It was a back and forth match that came down to the last two matches of the night.  Grandville held a 27-25 lead with the 140 and 145 pounds weight classes left.  Romeo capped off the dual with two consecutive pins and a 37-27 victory.

The goal of the day was to try things we do in practice and not worry about winning and losing.  We saw many wrestlers try some things they haven’t done before.  It was a really good day between facing some great competition and wrestling to get better.  Romeo had a few guys out and fielded a line-up with only two seniors.

Bulldogs travel to Imlay City

The Romeo Wrestling team was at Imlay City High School on Saturday, February 28 for a rare afternoon start.  This season has seen a shortage of referees so many have had to pull double duty on Saturdays.  Thus, a ref will officiate a morning quad and then travel to another high school to officiate an afternoon quad.  In attendance for the afternoon were: Flint Kearsley, Imlay City, Lamphere, and Romeo.

The Bulldogs had Kearsley for the first round.  The Hornets were missing a number of wrestlers, but, the ones they had were pretty good.  Romeo took round one 66-15.

Next up were the Spartans from Imlay City.  Imlay City always has a competitive team and this year was no different.  The Bulldogs wrestled tough as nails and pulled off a few big wins over some tough individuals.  The end result was Romeo 57  Imlay City  18.

In the final match of the evening Romeo had the Lamphere Rams.  Lamphere and Romeo were both 2-0 on the day coming into the last round.  Again, the Bulldogs won some big individual match-ups on their way to a 57-18 victory.

It was a great day that saw 12 freshman or sophomores see varsity action.  The goal for the day was to try things we have been working on in practice and the day was a nice step in the right direction.  There was some real improvement even from the previous Wednesday.  The Bulldogs are now 13-1 overall.

Here are the individual results for Romeo on Saturday, February 27, 2021:

MAC Red season closes on a high note!

The Macomb Area Conference Red Division wrapped up at Warren Woods Tower instead of Utica Ford.  Ford had to sit out the final quad due to some wrestlers in quarantine.   Perennial powerhouse Westland John Glenn filled in for Utica Ford.  The Bulldogs faced a tough, scrappy John Glenn team to kick off the night and finished with state-ranked Warren Woods Tower (#2 in D2).

Romeo got off to a great start winning 3 of the first 4 weight classes.  The Rockets came back with a few wins of their own to tighten the score at 21-18, but, the Bulldogs finished strong and came out with a 42 -24 win.

The final MAC Red dual meet of the season for the Bulldogs was against WWT. Both teams entered the dual missing some guys.  Romeo got off to a commanding 24-0 lead after four matches before WWT scored 3 straight wins to tighten the score.  For the second straight time in the night, Romeo finished the dual meet strong and closed out a 48-23 victory.
